Ella is my version of paradise. Picturesque mountain scenery in every direction, 50 shades of green, tea plantations as far as the eye can see, friendly locals and delicious food options.
A trip to Ella should be on everyone’s Sri Lankan itinerary, especially if you’re like me and love to hike.
These are the best things to do in Ella Sri Lanka.
Hike Ella Rock
For the best views in Ella, you must hike Ella Rock. Hiking Ella Rock was the highlight of my trip to Sri Lanka. See my guide to hiking Ella Rock here.
Hike Little Adams Peak
Another breathtaking hike in Ella, offering perfect views of Ella rock and the stunning valley beneath. Little Adams Peak is an easier hike than Ella Rock. See my guide to hiking Little Adams Peak.
Visit a tea plantation
A tea plantation is a must do when you’re in tea country. There is no shortage of options when choosing a tea plantation to visit in Ella. Halpewatte Tea Factory is a favourite.
Nine Arches Bridge
Perhaps one of the most photographed landmarks in Sri Lanka. You will find the picturesque nine arch train bridge a 5-minute drive and 15-minute walk from Ella Town. The Nine Arches Bridge is an unmissable attraction as far as I am concerned.
Take a train from Ella to Nuwara Eliya
The most picturesque train ride in Sri Lanka and perhaps the world. You can hang out the doors and windows of the train as you admire the lush scenery, just keep an eye out for tunnels.
Ravana Waterfall and caves
6 km out of Ella is Ravana Waterfall, which you can easily spot on the side of the road. The towering waterfall flows down the mountain and below the road. It is a great place to cool down on a hot day. When we visited tourists and locals were swimming in the waterfall.
Just up the road from Ravana Waterfall, you will find the Ravana Caves, another popular attraction in Ella.
Another picturesque waterfall worth checking out is Ella Gap Waterfall, this is the waterfall you can see from Ella town.
Sri Lankan Cooking Class
Ella is a popular destination for Sri Lankan cooking classes. La Ella offers a fun and affordable cooking class. For 2000 Rupees you will get a cooking lesson, recipes, a wine, beer or juice and dinner of course.
Enjoy a fresh pot of tea
How does a fresh pot of tea with one of the worlds best views sound to you? I certainly enjoyed kicking back and enjoying a cup of tea in Ella, a town renowned for just that.
Spoil yourself with a massage
One of the best things to do in Ella is treat yourself to a relaxing massage and spa day. You will find lots of day spas in Ella Town, but I recommend spoiling yourself and going to 98 Acres Resort and Spa.
Photo from the 98 Acres website.
Western Places to Eat in Ella
Chill – Perhaps the funkiest restaurant and bar in town. At Chill, you will find Western and Sri Lankan Cuisine.
La Ella – a four-story restaurant and nightclub with an amazing menu. This is also where I recommend taking a Sri Lankan cooking class in Ella.
MoozarElla – Serving the best woodfire Pizza I have ever tried.
