Travelling can be quite stressful at times – especially if you have lots of luggage to carry around. There are so many benefits to packing light, and although most people do aspire to pack light, it’s often not the easiest of tasks.
Packing light can not only help relieve stress, but it can also save you time and money, since you won’t have to wait around at baggage claim for your suitcase or wait in line to check it in, nor will you have to pay airline baggage fees.
So, in this post, we will share with you some of our top tips for packing light.
Make a packing list
Planning ahead is the most important thing to do. Instead of packing anything you like, consider how long you are travelling for, activities you will be doing during that time and the climate you are travelling to.
Use this information to create a packing list. To help you, you can find a packing list template online, use a simple spreadsheet, a tool like Trello, or even just plain old pen and paper.
You don’t want to carry a heavy suitcase full of stuff you don’t need and won’t use. So a packing list is a good way to keep yourself on track.
Plan your outfits
Again, like when making your packing list, you should take into account the outfits you will wear on your trip. Summer will require lighter clothing than winter, but that doesn’t mean you need to take 4 outfits per day and 12 one-piece swimsuits.
When planning your outfits, it can be helpful to pack neutral colours so you can mix and match throughout your trip. This will mean you can reuse clothing for a completely different look, and save you from having 3 weeks worth of clothes for 5 days.
Since shoes are what takes up the most space in your bags, you need to choose these carefully. Instead of taking a pair for each day or occasion, take 2-3 pairs that could work for multiple occasions. I suggest a pair of runners, sandals and thongs, for a warmer climate.
Use travel-sized cosmetics
Travel-sized cosmetics will allow you to save space in your luggage, and they’re often more than enough for what you need during your trip. Even if you’re not just carrying hand luggage, in which case travel cosmetics will be required, you’re going to find them a lot more practical and convenient to travel with anyway. In addition, try reducing the number of cosmetics you travel with.
Use hand luggage
Although it’s not always going to be possible – especially not for longer winter trips, you should try to travel with hand luggage as much as you can since it will save you stress, time and money.
