Perth is an incredible city and there is so much to see and do there, but a lot of people miss out when they visit because they don’t spend enough time exploring the surrounding area. While the city itself is great and you can easily spend an entire trip there without getting bored, there are some great day trips from Perth that are just a short drive away.
A lot of these destinations can be reached by bus and there are some tours that take people out to the surrounding area, however, it is usually easier to drive. You can find plenty of places for car rental near Perth airport and it makes it so much easier to get around if you have a car. Once you’re set up with some transport, you should take some of these great day trips from Perth.
Just 30 minutes drive from the centre of Perth you’ll find Fremantle, the city’s port at the mouth of the Swan River. The area has a very relaxed feel to it and it’s popular with artists and creatives. It’s one of those places where you can spend an afternoon just wandering around and taking in all of the beautiful buildings like the Italian style town hall. If you’re only going to be there for a day and you want to take in more of the city, taking a tram is the fastest way to get around. While there, it’s worth visiting the Fremantle Prison and the Maritime Museum as well.
Rottnest Island is a popular place for a weekend getaway and it’s great if you’re looking for something a bit more relaxing than the city. This beautiful island is filled with plenty of great beaches, some interesting historical attractions and lots of wildlife. In fact, the island gets its name from some of that wildlife because, when it was first discovered, explorers mistook the quokkas for rats and named the place Rotte Nest (rats nest). The island has plenty of opportunities for relaxing on the beach or going snorkelling. You can also visit the museum and some of the islands historical sites like the Wadjemup Lighthouse. You’ll have to get a ferry to get on the island but they only take around half an hour from Fremantle and they go regularly. For a full guide on things to do in Rottnest Island, click here.
Caversham Wildlife Park
If you’re interested in seeing some wildlife, Caversham Wildlife Park is a great day trip. It’s only half an hour drive from the city so you can easily get there in the car. You can see some of Australia’s best known animals like Kangaroos, Kookaburras, Wombats and Koala Bears (which aren’t actually bears, that’s a common myth about Australia). If you visit Molly’s Farm, you can get a more hands-on experience with the animals and feed some kangaroos. This is the ideal day trip if you’re visiting Perth with the family.
These places are all a stone’s throw away from Perth so while you’re there, you should jump in the car and explore the surrounding areas.
If you have even more time, the below destinations are also worth checking out. They are a bit further away but a day trip from Perth is still entirely possible.
The Pinnacles Desert
The Pinnacles Desert is located approximately 2 hours north of Perth, within Nambung National Park. You will need a car to explore the Pinnacles Desert. Alternatively, you could take a tour from Perth.
The Pinnacles Desert is characterised by thousands of limestone pillars that stick out from the desert floor, creating a unique landscape. The Pinnacles Desert covers 190 hectares of land and contains thousands of pinnacles, some over 5 metres high. Some are jagged, sharp-edged columns, rising to a point, while others resemble tombstones. You will notice a variation in colour due to varying soil types. A trail leads you through the million-year-old Pinnacles to a lookout. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to visit and photograph the landscapes.
