Oahus Best beaches
Oahu is paradise. The number of beaches to visit, hikes to choose from and adventures to go on are endless. You can be sure that there will be no shortage of things do to on Oahu, the challenge however, will be choosing what to do. This blog lists the Top 10 free things for backpackers to do on Oahu. Lanikai Pillbox Trail My favourite place on Oahu. Whenever I get time, I take the Lanikai Pillbox trail, and it never ceases to amaze me. For the last 3 months I have been lucky enough to live within biking distance to the trail head, and have been doing this hike usually two times a week. The view never gets old. I highly highly recommend doing the Lanakai Pillbox trail on your trip to Oahu. The trail follows a ridge up to three pillboxes, I recommend going all the way. It is a short hike, generally taking me 30 minutes to get to the third pillbox, but at a slow pace may take 1 hour. Pack water and some snacks because when you get to the top you wont want to come down. See my Guide to hiking Lanikai  Pillboxes.  Lanikai Beach […]

Free Activities on Kauai
Kauai is an island of Hawaii, known as the Garden Isle. The island offers an endless supply of natural beauty and sightseeing opportunities. The diversity in landscapes is most appreciated by adventurous types and outdoor enthusiasts. Things to do on Kauai Kalalau trail- By far one of the most scenic hiking trails I have ever taken. The Kalalau Trail follows the Na Pali Coast for 11 miles going up and down through the valleys. I would recommend taking a tent and some supplies and camping at Kalalau Beach, at the end of the trail. There are also options for the less experienced hikers. The first 2 miles of the trail leads to Hanakapiai Beach  and gives hikers a taste of what is to come. From Hanakapiai Beach hikers can choose to go inland for 2 more miles, which leads to Hanakapiai Falls or can continue along the Kalalau trail. Hanakapiai Falls is well worth the extra 4 miles if you have the time and energy. Waimea Canyon – Often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”. Along the road in there are several lookouts and places to stop to view the canyon. Waimea Conyon lookout is the most popular. Experienced […]

This post covers the top 5 free activities on Kauai. The good thing about Kauai and all Hawaiian Islands is all the good activities (in my opinion) are free: amazing beaches, surf, canyons and some of the best hiking in the world. Speaking of hiking, #1 is by far one of the most amazing hike I have ever been on and you MUST do it. To do these activities on Kauai you will need to hire a car. I would recommend taking a tent and some supplies and camping at Kalalau Beach, at the end of the trail. There are also options for the less experienced hikers. Hiking Manoa Falls
This blog will tell you everything you need to know about hiking Manoa Falls. Manoa Falls is one of the most popular waterfall hikes on Oahu. The short 1 mile hike takes you through a valley of rainforest, into a bamboo forest and ends at a Manoa falls, a 150ft waterfall. The waterfall is truly remarkable and the best I have been to on the island. The only downside is that you can’t swim there. The Trail Manoa Falls trail is well marked so you don’t need to worry about getting lost. The 1 mile hike takes about 30 minutes, one way. The trail is suitable for anyone including children, there is a moderate incline but no notable steep areas. The Manoa Falls trail can be very muddy in places, even days after rain, so be prepared to get dirty shoes. What to bring when hiking Manoa Falls As the Manoa Falls trail is quite short, around 2 miles in total, you don’t need to bring much with you. I suggest bringing: Hiking Shoes Insect repellant (I never use this but the area does have some insects) Sunscreen A bottle of water A piece of fruit And of course, a […]

Hiking Manoa Falls – Hawaii

The Lanikai Pillbox trail is by far my favourite hike on the island. This blog will tell you everything you need to know about hiking Lanikai Pillboxes. The Lanikai Pillbox Trail, also popularly known as the Kaiwa Ridge Trail, is one of the most scenic hiking trails on Oahu. The short hike rises just above beautiful Lanikai Beach rewarding hikers with some of the best vistas of Oahu’s windward side. Although the trail is short, the reward is huge! The Trail The 1-2 hour trail is classed as intermediate. Although it is short, it is steep in spots and can be challenging for some. The trail leads to three pillboxes. You can reach the first pillbox in 20-30 minutes. The second pillbox is just another 5 – 10 minutes away from the third pillbox in another 15-10 minutes further. I recommend going to all three. Getting to Lanikai Pillboxes The trail head is on Kaelepulu Dr, Kailua. If you type Lanikai Pillbox into Google Maps it will come up. From Waikiki it will take you about 40 minutes to drive to Lanikai Pillboxes. On weekends it can be very hard to find a park, so as soon as you enter […]
