I find that the more I stay at hostels, the more I love them! There are so many reasons why staying at hostels is so great,  here are my top 5 things to love about hostels.

Meeting new people

The best thing about staying in hostels is meeting new people.

The thought of sharing a room with complete strangers may be terrifying to first-time Hostel goers! However, as any Hostel regular will divulge it is one of the best ways to meet new people. Hostels are a hub for likeminded backpackers with a passion for travel and new experiences.  Everyone has different perspectives of what to do in the area and your new roommates might be the key to your next great adventure.

I have met some of my best friends in hostels and hope to meet more in the future.

If you don’t want to share a room, you can always opt for a private room. You will still meet lots of new and exciting people, but you will have privacy when you need it.

These are my tips for making friends as a solo traveller.

Location and Price

If you are travelling around the world, trying to make the most out your money, staying in a hostel is a great way to stretch your budget. Hostels are generally in a centralized location within walking distance of numerous attractions and reliable public transport.

You will get a bed in a hostel in the Downtown city center for much cheaper than a hotel in the downtown city centre. When travelling on a budget, but wanting to stay in the best locations, stay with a hostel.

Even if they aren’t in the best location, the front desk agent will be able to point you in the direction of the transit station if needed.

Getting new ideas about travel destinations

5 things to love about hostels

Often we plan to travel to the destinations we have heard about again and again and again. Destinations that are commonly known for tourism or recommended by our families or friends.

The greatest thing about hostels is they can often give you a different perspective on your trip, and encourage you to step outside your comfort zone exploring areas of the world you wouldn’t usually.

It might be the person you met last night that invited you to come to stay with them in their hometown, a place you never considered going. It could be the story about a destination you’ve never heard of and now have a desire to learn more about.

Hostels create new ideas for travel in so many ways. Not only do they create these ideas, they often fuel your motivation to do it, and sometimes introduce you to people to do it with.

Expanding your global and cultural knowledge

People from all different countries, cultures and cities stay in hostels all over the world. Meeting new people gives you the opportunity to expand your global and cultural knowledge.

Textbooks can only teach you so much. Sometimes the people you meet in hostels will teach you far more about cultures and countries than a book ever could.

This knowledge is invaluable and something that can add so much to your attitude, lifestyle and career.

Feeling at home away from home

Being surrounded by so many friendly people while travelling has the ability to make you feel right at home.

The first time I travelled to New York I had a terrible experience. I was meant to stay in a Bed and Breakfast however when I arrived no one was home. Being 18, alone, and a first timer in New York made it a nightmare. I was overwhelmed with no idea what to do. I got a taxi to HI Manhattan. As soon as I walked through the door I felt relieved. The staff were so friendly and helpful and did everything they could to make me feel welcome and comfortable. The hostel changed my NY experience.
