Free things to do on the Gold Coast

The best destinations for solo travellers

Literally, all of my favourite things to do on the Gold Coast are free. I have been lucky enough to call the Gold Coast home for over 7 years and have explored the majority of beaches, national park and surrounding rainforests of the Gold Coast.

The great thing about the Gold Coast is that you can come and visit and explore the natural beauty of the region for free, or you can come to shop and dine. The Gold Coast really does have something for everyone.

I know that people LOVE free things to do, so today I am going to share the very best free things to do on the Gold Coast. Let me guarantee that this wasn’t a hard list to put together because there are so many free things to do on the Gold Coast.

Explore the beautiful beaches

This is an obvious choice. The Gold Coast is home to over 72kms of coastline, all in pristine condition and completely free to access. If you are coming to the Gold Coast I have no doubt that a beach day or two is already on the itinerary.

I have some personal favourite Gold Coast beaches that I have shared with you here.

Chase Waterfalls

You may not know this yet, but the Gold Coast is home to some seriously amazing waterfalls and swimming holes, all surrounded by lush rainforest. You could spend the morning at the beach then head into the hinterland to chase waterfalls.

I have taken the time to explore as many Gold Coast waterfalls as possible to present you with the very best. Find out the best Gold Coast waterfalls here.

Visit lookouts

For any photographers (or wannabe photographers) out there, a day visiting the best Gold Coast lookouts will be right up your alley. I love sitting back and admiring the views of the Gold Coast City skyline meeting the ocean, particularly at sunset with a glass of wine in hand.

A locals favourite in Burleigh Headland or North Burleigh Headland, but there are many more Gold Coast lookouts offering amazing views. Find out my favourite Gold Coast Lookouts here.

Whale watching season runs from May to October so if you are at one of the lookouts during this time, keep your eyes peeled.

Hike through the rainforest

The Gold Coast has a variety of hiking trails with something to suit everyone. A locals favourite is the hike through Burleigh Heads National Park in the heart of the Gold Coast. This hike exposes you to the rainforest while passing one of the Gold Coasts most pristine waterway, Tallebudgera Creek.

There are several hiking trails all offering different scenery and varying in trail length and difficulty. I have shared my favourite Gold Coast hikes with you here.

Feed the rainbow lorikeets at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Every day at 8 am and 4 pm, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary allows visitors to feed the beautiful rainbow lorikeets for free! How amazing is that? This is a unique experience not to be missed. A gold coin donation is appreciated. You can find out more here.

Visit the markets

The Gold Coast has some seriously amazing markets that are absolutely free to visit. I can’t promise that you won’t end up buying something though.

My top recommendations are the Burleigh Farmers Markets, The Village Markets (Burleigh), Miami Marketta and the Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets.

Free festivals

One of the things I love most about the Gold Coast is the number of free events the city holds each year, including several festivals:

Bleach Festival – The Gold Coast’s largest arts and cultural Festival, held in March/ April each year. Bleach Festival has over 50 events for all ages and goes for over 17 days up and down the coast.

The Quicksilver Pro –  a world famous surfing events held right here on the Gold Coast. Don’t miss the chance to watch the world’s best surfers battle it out at one of the world’s best surfing spots, Snapper Rocks, held in February / March each year.

Blues on Broadbeach -one of the largest free festival, held over four days in May each year. Blues on Broadbeach brings together the best blues and soul music from all over the country.

Cooly Rocks – Cooly Rocks On is Australia’s largest 50’s & 60’s Nostalgia Festival held annually in Coolangatta celebrating Classic Cars, Rock ‘N Roll, Dancing, Surfing and more! Cooly Rocks is a free event and open to all ages and is held around June each year.

Swell Sculpture Festival – In September each year, Currumbin Beach becomes home to dozens of sculptures by local, national and international artists. Visitors can come to the Currumbin Beachfront to admire the sculptures and talk to artists.

Watch the sunset from Burleigh Hill

After a day of beach, waterfall and hiking adventures, grab a bottle of wine and head down to Burleigh Hill to watch the sunset. The atmosphere and views are unmatched.

As you can see, there are many free things to do on the Gold Coast.  If you are looking for even more to do on the Gold Coast, check out 101 things to do on the Gold Coast (the not free stuff).
