I have visited Mexico twice, heading to the same destination both times – the Yucatan Peninsular. The Yucatan Peninsular is where Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum are found, and what an amazing part of the world this is. The area hosts absolutely perfect beaches and endless underground cenotes to explore. This area of Mexico feels very developed and safe and one I would recommend to solo travellers. The first time I visited was solo and I explored the area via public bus. To be honest, the area feels quite Americanised and most locals speak basic english. The Best of Mexico is highlighted through photos in this blog.
Playa Del Carmen and Cancun
Cancun is the most popular area in the region, commonly visited during “spring break”. You will fly into Cancun and from there you can choose to stay or head down the peninsular to Playa Del Carmen and Tulum. The photos below are from Cancun and Playa Del Carmen.
Playa Del Carmen
Isla Mujeres is an island off the coast of Cancun. We sailed from Cancun to Isla Mujeres on a day trip, stopping along the way to go snorkelling in the perfect crystal clear waters. Our tour was on an open bar sailing boat, so things got crazy as you could imagine. If I went to Mexico again, I would spend a few nights on Isla Mujeres.
The Yucatan Peninsular is filled with underground cenotes, unique to the region. We explored many, some big, some small, some half open and some closed. We jumped into the cenote below not knowing what to expect then swam through it to an opening, super cool and scary.
The Tulum ruins are located on the coast of Tulum, offering a perfect backdrop. We did the Tulum ruins as part of a tour that included the ruins, zip lining, an AV tour, snorkelling and cenote adventures – what a day.
My favorite town in Mexico with a super chilled beach vibe. I spent my days in Tulum drinking cocktails on the beach, swimming and watching baby turtles hatch. Can you believe that one afternoon we were walking on the beach with not a person in sight when we seen hundreds of baby turtles running to shore. This is my favourite travel experience as it was so special and unexpected.
