Backpackers Guide to Lake Apoyo – Nicaragua

Lake Apoyo

Apoyo Lagoon was one of my favorite destinations in Nicaragua. Apoyo Lagoon is a nature reserve located between Granada and Masaya. The lake is a crater formed from a volcano eruption more than 20,000 years ago. Apoyo lagoon is the clearest lake in the region, as well as the deepest geological point in Central America. The glistening deep blue Crater Lake is the perfect location to swim, dive, sail, paddle or relax. I recommend taking a few days to chill out at Lake Apoyo, after a few months of backpacking I certainly enjoyed it.

Things to do Lake Apoyo

There isn’t much to do at Apoyo Lake other than relax, soak up the sun, drink cocktails, swim, kayak and if you are interested you can Scuba Dive.

From Hostel Paradiso you can arrange tours.

We took a tour called Pablo Escobar that went to 4 locations, Masaya Volcano, Masaya Markets, Lake Apoyo Lookout and another market. We paid $40 for 4 people- $10 each, so well worth it.

Dont miss the Lake Apoyo Lookout.
